C.S. Lewis on the God of Last Resort


It is a poor thing to strike our colours to God when the ship is going down under us; a poor thing to come to Him as a last resort, to offer up “our own” when it is no longer worth keeping. If God were proud He would hardly have us on such terms: but He is not proud, He stoops to conquer, He will have us even though we have shown that we prefer everything else to Him.

One fundamental(ist?) problem faces those of us who try to earn brownie points with God; he is entirely self-sufficient, and needs nothing we have to offer, including our good works, money and stringent obedience to religious codes. The truth is far more simple.

First John 4:16 tells us, “God is love.” As personified love, God needs nothing more than people who willingly receive his love; that’s you and me. I’ll venture onto a limb to say that love received is love returned, and that’s all he wants from us. “We are loving because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19 DNLT) We not only return God’s love, but because of God’s love, we love others, including those we can’t stand.

What may have begun as our last resort has become our first and only choice. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.b The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

  1. C. S. Lewis wasn’t a believer in Jesus Christ and he taught myriads of false teaching. We should go to God’s Word the Bible and hold fast to what He says. I am not saying this to be unkind or controversial, but because it is true and I am hoping that you will listen to godly warning. God bless you:)

    • In all love, I wonder how you get off judging Lewis as a nonbeliever, “For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” I agree that he was mistaken in many of his doctrinal positions, but ignorance is not sin, and I take severe umbrage at anyone judging him, or anyone else who claims Jesus’ name as a Christ-follower. I have known and loved many believers with whom I disagree regarding their Biblical interpretations. Matthew 7:16-20 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (17) Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (18) A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (19) Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (20) Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. If you look at the influence for the gospel that Lewis exerted among the academics of his time, even unto the present, you will have to admit that he bore tremendous spiritual fruit.

      Simply because you or I come to certain conclusions about what the Bible teaches doesn’t mean we are right. Only Jesus had certain knowledge of what the Bible means, because as the incarnate Word of God, he wrote it. Anyone else who thinks their Biblical interpretations are infallible is a fool. So, be careful how you point your finger, for you have three pointed back at yourself.

      • What you said about the Word of God comes straight from the pit of hell and is the reason why Lewis was an unbeliever and false teacher. He did not believe the Bible to be the holy inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God and so accepted the vain teachings of church tradition and doctrines of men rather than the sure teachings of the Scriptures. It is the Word of God that the Lord uses to lead us to Himself through repentant faith. Lewis may have had a nebulous influence upon academia, but he didn’t bear the fruit of the kingdom of God which is biblical faith in Christ Who is revealed to us only in the Scriptures and he led others in the way of embracing the damnable doctrines of men rather than the Holy Scriptures. Ask yourself this question, why did he not quote a single Scripture in his book Mere Christianity which was a supposed explanation of the Christian faith?

        Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

        This is the fruit of genuine belief:

        Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. Jeremiah 15:16-17

        Indignation over those who claim to be called by His name but are full of false ways because they follow their own way and not His way.

      • I appreciate your participation in this discussion, as such exchanges serve to augment and solidify our faith. Your passion for God’s Word is indeed admirable, and I know you love God with all your heart.

        As I see it, we are essentially dealing with opinions as to the correct view of God’s Word; is it inerrant, and if so, in which form? And we are secondarily applying that discussion to Lewis’ expressed beliefs regarding God’s Word. I think we agree about the Bible’s inerrancy. Our point of departure, however, lies in which of its many translations or versions can make a valid claim of being God’s true Word, given by inspiration of God’s Holy Spirit to godly men throughout history. Based on your comments, I assume you believe the only inerrant translation of God’s Word into English is the 1611 Authorized version. My take on the issue is somewhat different; God is the Bible’s Author, and he gave each writer his Truth, commissioning them to record it in their own language and style under the Holy Spirit’s oversight. This process wasn’t as simple or direct as it may seem, as the first few generations of God’s Word were delivered orally to the next generation. I vehemently disagree, however, with those who attack the Word’s credibility based on its original, oral form. It was entirely intact when the first scribes put pen to scroll-skin for posterity, and it remained intact through each generation of copies.

        When the time came to translate God’s Word into other languages, godly men attacked the project with much prayer and meticulous methodology. But regardless of their extreme care, the languages with which the translators were dealing often required careful analysis that produced a dynamically equivalent translation, rather than word-for-word. Of course, this “problem” posed no threat to God’s Word, as his Holy Spirit guided their word-choices such that the end product still carried God’s Truth to the world.

        Was that the end of the Holy Spirit’s involvement with God’s Word? Hardly! The ink-on-paper that we call the Bible still needs to be delivered to individuals, translated into our unique thought-processes to form our personal understanding. Apostle Paul nailed it in 1 Corinthians 2:13-14 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I assert that this last translation of God’s Word, into our minds and hearts, is the most important of all. That way, we are able to apply God’s Truth to our lives dynamically, not as a long string of commandments and statutes. Legalism is the inevitable product of trying to live by the words of God’s revelation, rather than by its Spirit.

        We indeed err when we subject God’s Word to scrutiny based on fallible human reason, but only by that reason are we able to understand it according to its greater context. Cognitive understanding, however, must always bow to God’s anointing of his Word to our hearts. While it is complete in the present canon of Scripture, and adding to or taking away from it bears a curse, God reserves the privilege of using his Word to convict individuals based on their unique needs. Thus, while our interpretation of God’s literal meaning behind the printed Word is black or white, its application to our lives through his Holy Spirit comes in infinite shades and hues.

        God’s Word is One, just as God is One, and any portion of Scripture removed from its context in the whole of the Word is nothing more than a partial truth. Have you ever noticed Apostle Paul’s use of the word, “therefore?” You have no doubt heard the saying, “Find out what ‘therefore’ is there for.” As an example, Romans 2:1 says, “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.” To discern how he arrived at that conclusion we must visit Chapter One, and so on. Ultimately, to understand any Bible passage’s true context, we must know the whole of God’s Word. To apply one or two verses willy-nilly is a grave mistake, and does violence to his inspired Word.

        Therein lies one of my own struggles: the temptation to pluck “proof-verses” from God’s Word to suit my own convenience. When I do so, my understanding of that principle condemns me all the more.

        To the discussion at hand, I believe Lewis struggled with that same issue. As a literary historian, his whole frame of reference demanded a contextual understanding of each ancient text, and in his mind the Bible was not an exception. While his religious background certainly colored his body of accepted dogma, his general understanding of God’s Word was without peer. Statistically, you likely subscribe to either Calvinist or Wesleyan/Arminian theology. Does that mean that anyone who propagates the other school of theological thought is teaching error? That sort of dogmatism, while typical of cultic sects, must not stain God’s true church.

        The whole Bible is God’s good news of salvation through Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. A significant part of that good news is God’s grace toward those of us whose understanding and behavior is imperfect. So please, do not refuse grace where God grants it.

It was while I was driving from the university to the women’s Christian book club that the Holy Spirit began to remind me of the truth that He had led me to through study of His Word and godly teaching: mankind is depraved and can never come to know God apart from His revelatory work in our hearts and minds by His Holy Spirit through His Holy Word. There is no room for human opinion in His work of revealing Himself to us from His Word, nor is there room for human opinion about the infallibility, inspiration, or inerrancy of His Word. Lewis contended that one could come to know the truth by use of the human intellect because he rejected God’s truth that mankind is depraved and incapable of knowing Him apart from His gracious disclosure of Himself to us by His Spirit through His Word and His Son Jesus Christ. He had no trust in the sufficiency of Scripture to enlighten the heart and mind of sinners by the power of the Holy Spirit because He rejected the truth that God’s Word the Bible is the infallible, inerrant, inspired revelation of Himself and His truth to us. He had his own opinions about faith, Jesus Christ, salvation, eternal life, godliness, Christ’s work on the cross for us, Christian fellowship, etc, because he rejected the truth of the Bible and put his trust in the opinions and traditions of men. Lewis was never born again by the Spirit of God through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. His work was a work of the flesh and has born the fruit of the flesh that is rotten and contributing to the apostasy of the visible church.
    You made some assumptions about me that are not correct. My faith and doctrine are anchored upon the Word of God and not the opinions of men. This is the work that Jesus Christ has done in my heart for His glory. He has used His Word to accomplish His work in my heart. God’s Word is His revelation to us whether we receive it or not, whether we believe it or not. It doesn’t become His Word when He uses it in our hearts, it is His Word so He does use it in our hearts. God’s Word is the power and authority in our lives because it is His Word, whether or not we believe it. Those who believe and receive His Word have eternal life because they place their faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Those who reject it and disbelieve it are condemned to hell for eternity, this will happen to them even though they don’t believe it.

    But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Galatians 3:22

    For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13

    C. S. Lewis never had that confidence in the Bible and this shows throughout his writings. He much preferred religious tradition and dogma. He much preferred his own opinions. His books are replete with his apostasy and error. Again, for one who had a general understanding of the Bible without peer why didn’t he quote the Bible in Mere Christianity? Why did he believe that much of the Bible was “good” myth? Why did he reject God’s account of creation and the fall revealed in His Word? Why did he come up with his own interpretations about the work that Jesus Christ accomplished for us? Why was he eager to embrace any who called themselves “Christian” as believers even though they denied biblical doctrines about Christ and salvation? Why did he reject the sufficiency of Christ’s work on the cross for us by embracing the false doctrine of purgatory? Why did he disbelieve in hell? Why did he believe that religious ritual was instrumental in salvation? Why did he believe that pagans and followers of false religions could belong to Christ apart from faith in Him? Why were his fictional works so deeply influenced by the occult? Why was he so enamored with Catholicism? Why was he such a hedonist? Where is the testimony of faith in Christ that transformed him from a wicked depraved sinner to a righteous God-fearing saint instead of a religious zealot? Why did he consider evolution a super biological fact? If we don’t receive and believe what the Bible says about Jesus Christ, then we are proving that we don’t really know Him. Yes, there is much room for growth for those who have put their faith in Christ, but they grow because He gives the increase. Lewis’ stature attained throughout the religious world is all about man and has nothing to do with Christ Jesus, even though he puts Christ’s name to use. We are called to avoid those who promote error contrary to the doctrine taught in the Bible, not exalt and excuse them. It all comes down to this, who do you love? Do you love Jesus Christ and His truth found exclusively in the Bible? Or do you love the vain imaginings of fallen man? That is the choice we must all make. Much of the Scriptures reveal that most prefer the falsehood of man rather than the truth of Jesus Christ.

    • First, I want to study the Scripture passages you mentioned. To that end I am using the resources available through e-Sword, Bible Gateway, Blue Letter Bible, and Bible Hub. I’ll not consult commentaries, as I agree that they are merely men’s opinions. Also, as I am not conversant with Biblical Hebrew or Greek, my exegesis relies on those who are.

      You will note in the following analysis that I try to define my terms as I go. Though it adds a lot of content, I believe it is necessary for understanding. I hope you won’t mind a lot of reading. After all, God packed a lot of good teaching into this chapter, as He did in so many others.

      On God’s Conveyance of Scripture

      As an overview of Scripture, I quote Jeremiah 23:28-31

      28 “The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream;
      And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully.
      What is the chaff to the wheat?” says the LORD.

      29 Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD,
      “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

      30 “Therefore behold, I am against the prophets,” says the LORD, “who steal My words every one from his neighbor. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets,” says the LORD, “who use their tongues and say, ‘He says.’

      The first thing that jumps out at me is: “What is chaff to the wheat?” says the LORD.

      Great question. Job 21:18 uses chaff and stubble (or stalk, before it is cut) interchangeably, so if we take that as precedent, we can see what they have in common regarding the wheat. I take “wheat” to mean the kernel, so both chaff and stubble serve to protect the kernel through its growth and harvest. Come harvest time they are separated from the kernel on the threshing floor. Are they wasted? Never! The farmer uses them as fibers to strengthen bricks, and as silage for fertilizer.

      So, how does that apply to God’s Word? In my opinion, human language serves God’s Truth as chaff serves the wheat kernel. It bears God’s Word to the harvest, when those who seek God’s Truth hear or read it. The Holy Spirit threshes the human language from the kernel of God’s Truth and feeds it to our mind and spirit, where He uses it to convict us of sin, to give us wisdom, and to reinforce our faith.

      Yet, like the chaff and straw, human language is not wasted, but continues to serve God’s Truth by conveying it from one recipient to other ears. And the process continues as God has ordained.

      Please keep in mind, Eliza, I realize that my analysis is nothing more than my opinion, another human commentary on God’s Word. Yet, how else can we understand the Message? We think verbally, so each word we read or hear takes on our understanding of it. God certainly guides that understanding through His Holy Spirit, but that still doesn’t eliminate language’s function.

      I hope you will forgive my verbosity, as I typically think with my fingers on a keyboard. So, on with the issue at hand.

      On Galatians 3:22

      My typical practice is to first examine a verse’s greater context, and that often takes me to the chapter’s first verse, or even into the previous chapter. For Galatians 3:22 I must begin with verse one:

      O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

      Obviously, this introduces another of Paul’s attacks on the judaizers’ yeast. What is the truth to which he referred? Ephesians chapter two is a beautiful explanation of God’s good news for us. Back to Galatians; verse two presents the essential question: Works, or hearing of faith? Much of Paul’s writing cancels out the “works” aspect of salvation, so we deal with “hearing of faith,” in depth. “Of” suggests a certain kind or quality of hearing; in this case it is faith-hearing, which rules out fleshly hearing (our normal mode of hearing). The rest of this passage is rhetorical, as it implies a “yes” answer. For Paul’s detailed answer we turn to verses five through nine:

      5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

      First, Paul repeats his question of verse two, which makes it even more central to his argument. Then, verse six gives a prime example of the hearing of faith.

      “Therefore” is a lovely word, as it tells us that we aren’t finished, but we must keep going to complete this concept. So, verse seven gives us the key to who we are in Christ Jesus; we are sons of Abraham by holding to the same faith that he did. My take on this is that God declared a change in the identity of God’s chosen people. The fleshly Israel is no longer the apple of God’s eye, but Christ-followers have taken over that role. I use the term, “Christ-followers,” because it implies a walk in His Way by faith in the efficacy of His sacrificial work.

      Verses ten through twelve differentiate works of the Law from faith. Verses thirteen and fourteen tell us how Christ took the curse of the Law upon Himself, and why He did it. Paul’s reference to the Gentiles would have appeared to the Jews as apostasy. That explains the Judaizers’ insistence on the Gentiles converting to Judaism.

      Verse fifteen demands special attention: Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.

      “A man’s covenant” is his disposition of his property. In this use it refers to Paul’s intellectual property, or his interpretation of Christ’s redemptive work based on the balance of Scripture. Serious students of God’s Word indeed confirm Paul’s covenant because, not only is it God-breathed, but it is also perfectly consistent with the rest of God’s word. That last part is the test of any translation, paraphrase, commentary, exegesis, or even preaching.

      Verse sixteen gathers even more authority from the Hebrew Scriptures, with references to Genesis 12:7, 13:15, and 24:7. Notice that the NKJV uses “descendants,” instead of “seed” in those passages. I should think that since Paul specified one (singular) seed, the NKJV team would have rendered the OT references the same way. In cases like that I vastly prefer the KJV.

      Verses eighteen through twenty-one further explain and differentiate the Law, from God’s faith-promise to Abraham.

      And that brings us to the passage you referenced, verse twenty-two. “But” contrasts this from the suggestion that life, through righteousness, could have been by the law. Paul’s reference to, “the Scripture,” treats God’s Word as a whole, which it certainly is. Before faith, all of mankind is confined by the Law, under sin. God’s promise of eternal life by faith in Jesus Christ goes only to those who believe that Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, are their only way to complete reconciliation with our Father, and the sanctification which that relationship produces.

  3. Yes, to much of what you said, but what does that have to do with Lewis’ unbelief in regards to God’s Word? The point that I made was that God’s Word is inspired, inerrant and infallible and unassailable in its disposition of all men, whether believers or unbelievers. Because God’s Word is true and not a lie, or equivocation, or mistaken, then believers must treat it with the utmost respect, because it is what God has said to us, and ultimately, to all of mankind! If an individual, such as C. S. Lewis, arrogantly disbelieves, finds fault with and corrects God’s Word to mankind, then that speaks volumes about that person’s relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He, Jesus Christ, didn’t treat God’s Word, His Word actually, in that manner, nor did He tolerate those who were dismissive towards His Word, He labeled such as a brood of vipers, and blind! He used His Word to battle the enemy and to convict sinners of their unbelief. I am, of course, referring to His handling of the Old Testament in this case, since the entirety of the Bible is His Word, of course, keeping in mind its historically accurate and correct disclosure of dialogue, situations, occurrences etc.

    It is interesting that you quoted that verse out of Jeremiah, since I am currently reading Jeremiah, one of my favorite books, since it clearly depicts the difference between those who hold to God and His word, and those who follow idols and false teaching. The Lord used Jeremiah in my life when I was dealing with the issue of false teaching, which is so prevalent within the visible church. As far as that verse you quoted, the chaff is the false teaching and the wheat is the Word of God. Throughout the Scriptures, chaff has always been that which is worthless and wheat has been what is valuable. Here is a great example:

    11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn: but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Matthew 3:11-12

    Since God is the Author of language, it isn’t a problem for Him to use it as He sees fit to communicate His truth with us, since He has created us for language and to reason and learn by language. All we have to do is to trust and believe in Him through faith in His Son Jesus Christ and belief in His truth, the Bible. Disbelief in what God has said in His Word by either taking away from it or adding to it brings upon the one who does so, His severe judgment, no matter their profession. God bless you:)

    • Phew! You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve begun this reply, and each time I’ve lost it before I could click “Reply.” I am undaunted, however, so here I go again. This time I’m composing in WordPad, so I can paste it into the reply field in WordPress.

      I wanted to tell you that I stand (or sit) in awe at your facility with verbal communication. I could learn much from you, both in Biblical teaching and in writing. With each round of our discussion my opinion of your astuteness climbs several points, but my purpose with this is not to flatter you. Rather, I want to try and clarify my position on God’s Word and the Lewis issue.

      You’ve said nothing I disagree with concerning the awesome power, authority and divine Authorship of God’s Word. It contains, in a finite number of words and principles, God’s infinite wisdom and knowledge for His fallen creation. I am completely awestruck by His absolute, loving grace toward us, that He demonstrated by giving us His written Word, His incarnate Word, who is our Lord Jesus Christ, and His Holy Spirit, who anoints His Word to our hearts and minds through the mustard seed-faith that He gave us to draw us to Himself. I simply cannot contain my gratitude and wonder that He would give such marvellous gifts to a sinner like me.

      My only issue with your statements about Lewis is they seem judgemental (note, I said “seem”). We all have our opinions, but any that deal with another’s relationship to God are simply off base. I can’t count the references in Scripture that exhort us to reserve judgement on others. Our insight into others’ motives based on their actions and words is restricted by Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

      The prophet Samuel listened to God concerning his assumption that he should anoint Eliab to be king. 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Granted, this passage mentions only appearance and physical stature, but the principle applies also to spiritual stature.

      We have neither the obligation nor the right to sit in judgement of others’ spiritual condition; that’s God’s business and not ours. We must, however, exercise discernment within the church regarding our brothers’ and sisters’ behavior, but only as far as ministering God’s chastizement to them, and only according to the Bible’s clear procedures of church discipline.

      You wrote, “If an individual, such as C. S. Lewis, arrogantly disbelieves, ….” I would have no issue with that statement if you had included, “seems to,” in your assessment of Lewis’ statements. I too take issue with some of his statements, but I would never accuse him of being a nonbeliever. That’s God’s job, and I’d rather not try to fill His shoes as the Judge of anyone else.

    14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” 18 “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

    4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.” Revelation 18:4-5

    This all takes discerning between what is true and what is false, and who is true and who is a liar. We are commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ to not let ourselves be deceived.
    This is what God has done in my heart by His Holy Spirit and I pray He does in the hearts of all of His children who are erring by applauding and defending those who are false.

    5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.” Mark 13:5-6

      I’m pleased to say our exchange has motivated me to take a more critical look at Lewis’ writings. Please don’t think I was ever his disciple, but I used his writings as stimulation for thought and discussion (I certainly succeeded there). I do hope I never unwittingly supported any of his errors with my writing, and from here on I’ll be more careful about appearing to support his theology or recommending his work for general acceptance.

      Thanks again for the time you’ve spent on this discussion, and please feel free to tear my offerings to shreds if they deserve it. My only desire is to glorify my Father and His only begotten Son Jesus.


      • Praise God for His mercy and grace given to us through His Son Jesus Christ! If that is your sincere desire then seek the Lord and His wisdom about the current state of the church today and seek Him to give you a single-hearted devotion to Him that is not in anyway double minded with the desire to please and appease man. This is something we must all seek after. God bless you:)
